This is a beautiful, powerful, intense handfasting ritual for a solar eclipse.
I know that some people believe that new moons are not a good time for handfastings, but if you’re here, you know that you are hoping to find something that says otherwise. Honestly, a handfasting can happen whenever you want it to. It is your intent and your love and your desire that makes the ritual what it is so timing is what feels right to you.
Personally, I think an eclipse is the perfect time for a handfasting. You have the sun and the moon in perfect balance. The power and energies of both are in sync with each other and that makes the underlying energies and intents even stronger.
Creating Sacred Space
East: Guardian of the East, of Air, the sunrise, new beginnings, wind and breath, the mind and intellect, curiosity and exploration, I summon your presence, that you may weave tightly the bonds of Heart, Spirit, and Love between these two. Let none undo the fabric of their love.
South: Guardian of the South, of Fire, midday, vitality and vibrance, light and passion, the heart and desires, love and excitement, I summon your presence, that you may ignite the passion and love for this blessed pair ever burning yet never one consuming the other.
West: Guardian of the West, of Water, the sunset, rest and reflection, the water element, emotions and intuition, spiritual depths and introspection, I summon your presence, that you may bless this couple with a love as deep as any ocean and many kisses in the rain.
North: Guardian of the North, of Earth, of grounding, homecoming and balance, the earth element, the physical body and its place in the natural world, I summon your presence, that you may bless this man and this lady with thy strength and wisdom.
ALL FOUR TOGETHER: Gracious Lady, Gentle Lord, grant this blessed pair thy love and protection. Blessed be!
Officiant:
We gather today to bind this couple in a ritual of love. The new moon is a time for new beginnings but today, not only do we have the new moon, we also have the energies of a solar eclipse. This makes a perfect representation of the union of harmony two people.
As the sun and the moon meet in the sky above, these two people join together in a union of everlasting love.
Expression of Intent
Officiant:
Know now before you go further, that since your lives have crossed in this life you have formed ties between each other.
As you seek to enter this state of matrimony you should strive to make real, the ideals which give meaning to both this ceremony and the institution of marriage.
With full awareness, know that within this circle you are not only declaring your intent to be handfasted before your friends and family, but you speak that intent also to your creative higher powers.
The promises made today and the ties that are bound here greatly strengthen your union; they will cross the years and lives of each soul’s growth.
Do you still seek to enter this ceremony?
The couple responds: “Yes, We Seek to Enter.”
In times past it was believed that the human soul shared characteristics with all things divine. It is this belief which assigned virtues to the cardinal directions; East, South, West and North. It is in this tradition that a blessing is offered in support of this ceremony.
Bless this union with the gifts of the East. Communication of the heart, mind, body, and soul, fresh beginnings with the start of each new day and the knowledge of the growth found in the sharing of silences.
Bless this union with the gifts of the South. Warmth of hearth and home, the fire of heart’s passion, and the light created by both to lighten the darkest of times.
Bless this union with the gifts of the West. The deep commitments of the lake, the swift excitement of the river, the refreshing cleansing of the rain, and the all-encompassing passion of the sea.
Bless this union with the gifts of the North. A firm foundation on which to build, fertility of the fields to enrich your lives and a stable home to which you may always return.
Each of these blessings from the four cardinal directions emphasizes those things which will help you build a happy and successful union. Yet they are only tools. Tools which you must use together in order to create what you seek in this union.
Officiant:
Having expressed your intentions, may the light of love, respect and understanding shine eternally for you.
Love is a friendship that has caught fire. It is the quiet understanding, mutual confidence, sharing and forgiving. It is loyalty through good and bad times. It settles for less than perfection and makes allowances for human weaknesses. Love is content with the present, it hopes for the future but does not brood over the past. It is the day in day out chronicle of irritations, problems, compromises, small disappointments, big victories and working toward common goals. If you have love in your life, it can make up for many things that you lack. If you do not have love, no matter what else there is, it isn’t enough.

Sixth cord is draped across the couple’s hands
Officiant: “And so the sixth binding is made.”
Both:
You cannot possess me, for I belong to myself. But while we both wish it, I give you that which is mine to give.
You cannot command me, for I am a free person. But I shall serve you in those ways you require, and the honeycomb will taste sweeter coming from my hand.
I pledge to you that yours will be the name I cry aloud in the night, and the eyes into which I smile in the morning.
I pledge to you my living and my dying, each equally in your care. I shall be a shield for your back, and you for mine. I shall not slander you, nor you me. I shall honor you above all others, and when we quarrel, we shall do so in private, and tell no strangers our grievances.
This is the marriage of equals.
Heart to thee, Soul to thee, Body to thee, Forever and always, So mote it be.
Officiant: “The knots of this binding are not formed by these chords but instead by your vows. Either of you may drop the chords, for as always, you hold in your own hands the making of breaking of this union.”

Officiant: “We have thanked the God and Goddess and dismissed the guardians, but the exchange that has happened here today will never be forgotten by them or us. It is nothing less than magical. The circle is released but never broken. Merry Meet, Merry Part and Merry Meet again. Blessed Be!!”
The newly handfasted couple may now kiss.
The Jump
As the couple leaves the circle, the couple jumps over a sword and broom while holding hands. The sword is symbolic of cutting ties with the old life, before they were together, and the broom represents the remnants being swept away.
