Red One, directed by Jake Kasdan, is a thrilling and heartwarming Christmas action film that takes viewers on a wild ride through the enchanting yet dangerous world of the North Pole. Starring Dwayne Johnson as Callum Drift and Chris Evans as Jack O’Malley, the movie delivers a perfect blend of excitement, humor, and holiday spirit.
It has stunning visuals and really drew me into the story. It started out with some fun spy-like ideas with Santa being under tighter protection than POTUS. Then, when we reach the North Pole and it is a high-tech, secretive base guarded by elite security forces, I knew this one was to be a holiday favorite. The storyline kicks off with a gripping sequence where Santa Claus, played by J.K. Simmons, is kidnapped by a mysterious black ops team. This unexpected turn sets the stage for an epic rescue mission led by Callum Drift and Jack O’Malley. Part of me actually wondered if Santa did this to make sure Callum didn’t truly want to quit his job.
I loved the scenes with Krampus, Santa’s estranged brother played by Kristofer Hivju. The dynamic between the characters is electric, and the tension is balanced with well-timed humor. The action sequences are well-choreographed and keep viewers on the edge of their seats, particularly the showdown with GrĂœla, the winter witch who plans to use magical snow globes to imprison naughty children. Honestly, since I love Krampus, it made it even more delightful. I would watch an entire movie about him!
The dynamics between Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans is undeniable, bringing a perfect mix of brawn and brains to their characters. Their journey from reluctant partners to a formidable team is both entertaining and heartwarming. Jack’s relationship with his son Dylan, portrayed by Wesley Kimmel, adds an emotional depth to the story, culminating in a touching scene where they break free from GrĂœla’s magical imprisonment through the power of their bond. This might have been a bit too mushy, but hey, tiz the season!
Hubby and I really enjoyed it. It was the perfect Christmas movie (since The Christmas Chronicles staring Kurt Russell – with special guest one year of his beautiful not-wife, Goldie Hawn)
