Women in Tech – an important social cause

Lack of women in technology is a significant social concern with extensive consequences. It is a social cause that is important to me as a woman who has been in the technology field since 2006. Even now, this imbalance not only restricts opportunities for women but also stifles the overall potential of the tech industry. By creating a more inclusive and fair environment, we can tap into the full creative and innovative capabilities of women in STEM fields but especially in information technology.

One of the primary reasons why women in tech is a social cause is the gender bias that persists in the industry. Stereotypes and prejudices often discourage women from pursuing careers in technology, leading to a lack of diversity in the workforce. This bias can manifest in various forms, such as unconscious bias in hiring practices, limited mentorship opportunities for women, and a hostile work environment, even including sexual harassment.

The lack of women in the STEM fields have had a negative impact on the industry itself. Studies have shown that diverse teams are more innovative and creative, leading to better products and services. Somehow, we need to encourage women who have succeeded in their STEM fields to step forward and mentor younger women as they explore possible STEM career paths.

Addressing this requires a multifaceted approach. It involves challenging deeply ingrained stereotypes and promoting gender equality throughout the educational system and career development pathways. This means fostering a supportive learning environment where girls and young women feel encouraged to pursue STEM subjects and providing them with access to mentorship and role models who can inspire and guide them.

Furthermore, organizations within the tech industry must take proactive steps to create inclusive work environments that foster a sense of belonging and support for women. This involves implementing policies and practices that address unconscious bias in hiring and promotion, providing equal opportunities for professional development, and creating employee resource groups that offer a safe space for women to connect and network.

Organizations can also play a vital role in providing mentorship opportunities for women in technology fiels. Mentorship programs can offer guidance, support, and career advice from experienced professionals, helping women to navigate challenges and build their networks. By investing in mentorship and creating inclusive work environments, organizations can contribute to a more equitable and diverse tech industry.

One organization that is making a significant impact in promoting women in tech is AnitaB.Org. Founded in 1990, AnitaB.Org is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the number of women in technology fields. Through its various programs and initiatives, AnitaB.Org provides resources, mentorship, and networking opportunities for women in tech. The organization also advocates for policies and practices that promote gender equality in the workplace. Nearly one year ago, I signed up to get help from AnitaB.org, but less than 3 months in, I ended up signing up to be a mentor and became the Minneapolis Program and Event Manager.

It’s not so much that I felt that I was capable to do this, but rather there was a need and no one else was stepping forward, so here I am.

Today, I feel I am really making a difference. Last year at this time, I never dreamt that I would be able to do something as inspirational and significant.

Isn’t it amazing what we as women can do when we put our minds to it!
